Paul Bellila’s Favorite Thing: La Valentine
One of my favorite design objects is the typewriter, La Valentine, by Ettore Sottsass. More than being just well-designed, it’s a magical piece that changed, in part, the life of women.
In 1969, Olivetti distributed a portable typewriter, which offered millions of people the possibility to [express] themselves. In this period, women began to work like men, and often as stenographers.
The Valentine became the icon of free writing. Ettore Sottsass was a designer of talent, concerned by time. He developed many objects which are now iconic. La Valentine is an iconic piece of the ’70s.
